In Canada, millions of dollars are provided each year for athletic and academic scholarships. Sadly, you would be hard-pressed to find scholarships of any amount in Canada that support promising young poets. We hope you will join us to help change that, through your gift to the Paddy O’Rourke Poetry Scholarship.

For the judging criteria, please refer to our Apply page on this site. You will see that the goal is to encourage and acknowledge our best young poets from Saskatchewan, regardless of their financial status or ultimate career goal. (We do require that they attend a post-secondary institution, regardless of where it is located, and take at least one post-secondary class related to poetry, such as a creative writing class, English 101, etc.)

Important Information for Donors:

The Paddy O’Rourke Poetry Scholarship was established by his very close friends, Glen and Sonia Sorestad, and Ray and Debbie Penner. A fundraising Tribute Concert was held shortly after Paddy’s passing in September of 2017. The funds raised were used to establish the scholarship. Presently, the Scholarship is being coordinated by Glen, Sonia, Debbie and Ray – as volunteers – with all financial matters handled through a formal agreement with the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Glen is the Chair of our Group. A member of the Order of Canada and Saskatchewan’s first Poet Laureate, Glen has published numerous books of poetry and was, along with Sonia, among the four co-founders of the Canadian literary publisher, Thistledown Press.
